What is a Resume?
When applying for a job, you can either complete a job application form or send in your resume and cover letter with photocopies of supporting documents (eg education certificates, awards and ECA records).

A resume is a presentation tool to market yourself to prospective employers so as to get as many interviews as possible, thereby increasing your chances of securing a job within a shorter period of time.

An effective resume provides pertinent information your prospective employer wants to know about you. It will stand out and grab the attention of the employers, thereby increasing your chances of being invited for interviews.

What Should be Included in Your Resume?
A resume should be organised so that it is easy to read and understand. The information that should be included are given below.

1. Name, Address, Telephone, E-mail Address, Contact Numbers and other basic information about yourself (race, gender, nationality, etc)
  • Avoid using nicknames.
  • Use a permanent telephone number. For voice mail box greetings in your mobile phone or pager, use a neutral greeting, eg, "Hello, this is John. Please leave a message for me and I will return your call as soon as possible".
  • Choose an email address that sounds professional
2. Education and Qualifications
  • List the schools or institutions you have attended, the field or subjects you studied, the qualifications attained, and any other awards (eg COM).
  • List your most recent educational information and professional qualifications first.
3. Accomplishments
  • List the various accomplishments through your training and National Service (for guys), eg, projects completed and awards won.
  • List your accomplishments through your activities organised by the schools or institutions you attended or other organisations.
4. Co-curricular Activities / Community Work
  • List any co-curricular activities you have participated in school and any other community or volunteer groups.
  • Indicate the positions you held, such as member, committee member, treasurer or secretary.
5. Work Experience
  • Include all full-time or part-time jobs that you have held, or any industrial attachments that you have been through.
  • For each job, state the name of the company, the job title and work responsibilities, and duration (eg Jun 98 to Jul 98).
  • List your most recent job experience first.
 Design of Your Resume
Use A4 size white paper. Print only on one side of the paper.

Use "safe" font typefaces such as Arial, Times New Roman. Avoid using more than one typeface.

Do not fold your resume - mail it in a large envelope.
 Resume Checkup
Check, check and check! Make sure that your resume has no typographical errors or grammatical mistakes before sending out. Get some friends to proofread it.
